Resident Evil: Retribution
In my mind, pound for pound, Resident Evil: Retribution is the greatest action movie ever made. There is really nothing to complain about in this one. It's got the best cold open in the entire series (so good they play the damn thing twice) and then they follow it up with a SECOND cold open.
Having watched this in 4K UHD, the one thing I can be certain of is that PWSA truly truly cares about the art he makes. Every scene is littered with gorgeous lighting, badass action and violence, and unrivaled compassion for his characters. Every set piece leaves you holding your breath hoping that everyone is okay and alright afterward because you want them to be safe.
Alice is as incredible as ever in this. Milla Jovovich is truly the lifeblood of these movies and pushes them so far beyond their prospective peak with each performance. She flourishes in Retribution as a chameleon in each new location, blending in with her surroundings as if she'd seen it all before and will see it all again another time.
The Resident Evil movies have been some of my favorite discoveries from 2021, but none of them will beat out the experience, joy, and love I got from Retribution. This is one for the ages.
