Obsession
when I heard curry barker was directing the new texas chainsaw massacre, I wanted to see how he has evolved from his first YouTube film (feature length, he’s known for shorts as well) milk & serial. and holy shit is leatherface in good hands. phenomenal theatrical debut from barker.
it’s so overwhelmingly tense and deeply devastating. downright uncomfortable the whole way through. inde navarrette gives a hauntingly uncanny valley performance. I saw barker in an interview wanting to stress the fact that nikki is a victim and it showed beautifully. baron should have been killed with hammers. the lack of autonomy and agency is a type of body horror that feels so real to real life (and is). navarrette’s performance is incredible and so layered. comparable to lily rose depp in nosferatu. I won’t lie, a couple of the jumpscares made me scream out loud a couple of times. they didn’t feel cheap though. the lighting was also to die for.
depending on how he does texas chainsaw massacre, curry barker could become a master of horror in the future. I so look forward to it.
