Sinners
Watched in IMAX
Coogler's entry in the already crowded vampire genre is totally deserved, and he's somehow able to pair the centuries-old creature with the long history of blues music in the 1930s South.
The most impressive bit for me is how he not only explores the seductive temptation of immortality, but suggests vampirism as a means of social freedom and escape during a time period where race and prejudice still ran deep.
Initially had this rated 4.5 stars from my first watch, but I loved it even more my second time around; it's a clear masterpiece.
Some final thoughts:
I wish Coogler hadn't separated the post credits scene out like that, because it wraps things up beautifully with reminiscence, and I'm sure a handful of people missed out on these scenes by leaving early.
Loved the clear inspiration from Death in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish for the character Remmick.
To be living during a time when John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Ludwig Göransson are putting out masterpieces like this is a blessing.
