Ahsoka
Ahsoka is a bizarre phenomenon for me. As someone who did not enjoy rebels and had no connection to the characters from that show, I was oddly excited for this one. While yeah I wasn't into rebels, I really wanted to be. The characters were really interesting and had some fantastic moments that just made me wish the other moments weren't so...for a lack of a better description...plain. And here in this show, I can happily say I thought they did a pretty decent job! The characters felt more fleshed out, their dynamics were more clearly defined, and the dialogue felt like it was made for everyone rather than the Disney XD channel. This show felt like it trusted the audience more and I never felt talked down to, which was one of my bigger issues with Rebels. The characters felt more alive and I'm happy to say the way the characters are used in this show feels natural and makes sense given their ending in Rebels. And the new characters are incredible too! With very little screen time, Baylan and Shin managed to steal the show and a lot of the time I found myself more interested in their story than Ahsoka's. Ray Stevenson did such an incredible job, often turning the corniest dialogue into stuff that was actually palatable. I'm sad we won't be getting any more of him as the character, but I'm so happy his last role was so well received. The other standout was Lars as Thrawn. The moment he showed up, the show just got so much better. For the first half of the series, my biggest complaint was that it felt unfocused. We had these two new sort of jedi sort of sith and one partial night sister who seemed to just be tools of getting the bigger villain set up. It felt like a marvel show, with five set up episodes only for the true villain to be revealed at the end. And I'll be honest, I was nervous it was going that way! But thrawn showed up at the exact right time and immediately, the show was his. It is so refreshing to see a villain who is smarter than the heroes and beats them not by winning a cool action scene, but by outsmarting them. A lot of people, especially tiktok mfs were calling this show the peak of star wars. and when I watched his scenes, I really wanted to agree. HOWEVER, I do not. And here is my segway for me to talk about the shit I didn't like. there was a lot about this show that just really didn't work for me. My biggest issue was there was a lot to nitpick, and usually I don't really give a shit about that in a show, but here there were so many things. And after a while there's only so much you can ignore. And another big issue I had was the camera work, especially the camera work during fight scenes. Overall, the camera work was just you're basic stuff you'd see in any disney+ show and it really did not do the fight scenes any favors. A lot of the fight scenes, were really really terrible. Like not bad...actually terrible. Some of them were great don't get me wrong! Episode 5, Ahsoka vs. baylan, and Ahsoka vs. Morgan were definetly the standouts. But the rest were either just fine or really bad. I especially noticed it during the finale, but the choreography was painfully slow and felt strangely lazy? Especially when the trio is fighting the night troopers, it looked terrible. I thought to myself, man I could recreate this scene. And that's not a good thing!!! Considering how out of shape I am that's really quite bad. And all those things combined just led to the show feeling quite cheap at times, which was jarring because at other times it didn't. The quality would change so dramatically depending on the scene or the episode and it just left a weird feeling. But overall these negatives did not overshine how I felt about the show as a whole. I love the character of Ahsoka and I really loved the arc she went through this season. There were a lot of moments when characters would look at the force from a more spiritual side and that's something we need more of!! The force is such an interesting concept and considering Ahsoka is the daughter, it makes perfect sense that it's lore is furthered explained through her and I hope they do more of it next season. Overall though, this show is not perfect, but that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable. great villains, great protagonist, and some really great moments. It never blew me away, but it did make me hopeful for the future of star wars.
Also the last scene is perfect, so good in fact I am giving the show a 4/5 instead of the 3.5/5 I was planning on giving it. give me more beautiful force moments star wars!! Please!!!
Also shin is gorgeous and I may be in love. If anyone has Ivanna Sakhon’s number please send it I am in DESPERATE need.
