Chicago

I’m writing this review for my future self. I watched this every Sunday back in 2021. Have rewatched it a couple of times since then. And June 4 was when my five star rating (given in every time I’ve watched this since 2020) dropped to a 4 point 5.  The drop could only be explained by the time I took off of Chicago to talk to this health sciences boy who hit me up on the day’s early hours, after I went out clubbing. I’m writing this review in bed at 4am on June 12, a week after I told this boy that talking to him makes me feel like I’ve regressed back to a version of me that simply does not exist today. In my own words, I told him that talking to him now, in 2023, felt out of character. It really was. Talking to him while the movie was paused (specifically paused it before Roxie’s solo number started) was not an enriching experience. And when I resumed the film, the momentum was missing. I found myself bored out of my skull, as the momentum that Rob Marshall (the director) was building just vanished.  Chicago is a movie that starts off with the loudest bang, then one-by-one proceeds to showcase one showstopper after another. The first thirty minutes are stunning, the best first act I’ve seen in all of cinema. The numbers that followed, on their own, simply were unable to compare because I paused the movie. Each subsequent number builds and builds and builds on the momentum that Velma’s opener provides, and talking to this guy for an hour just ruined that momentum. This is one movie that an intermission would be harmful to. The guy is also not worth talking to ❤️ this is still one of my favorite movies though! The movie that defined the musical and the movie that I can confidently say is one of my inspirations in my journey as a filmmaker. Hopefully on my next rewatch I wouldn’t pause this for a stupid reason!
