Coco
AMAZING animation. I remember when I first watched it on its opening weekend at Shang, when its screens were brighter, I really did think the water in the sinkhole was live-action because damn it looked so realistic.
Then on next week’s rewatch at an IMAX, I remember being stunned by those full shots of Miguel’s arrival: the shot of the bridge, the shot of the Land of the Dead.
Peak of human creativity tbh. I also have much respect for this film’s screenplay as well. It is so on-your-face but not overbearing, and it is a taut, efficient screenplay. Magnificent.
The family dynamics are also authentic and sincere. Rooted in lived experiences too, and even I, a Filipino, found the characters familiar.
Truly a magnificent masterpiece from Pixar. Despite the various sequels they put out in the 2010s, this original film showed that Pixar still got it.
My gosh, I remember crying so hard at the ending when I first watched it at Shang. Miguel’s rendition of Remember Me to mama Coco made me cry, but ooh boy Hector crossing the bridge made me sob!
But I didn’t cry in this rewatch tbh… either Coco has already run its course for me or my anti-depressant and anti-psychotic are on full effect. I guess both!
