Roma
this really hit home for me. it deserved every praise it got, and it deserved all its nominations, and cuaron deserved his best director oscar. this should have won best picture, not green book (i have not watched that though so my opinion might change). for a film with no plot, this was really immersive. the 70s setting of roma was immersive, the characters felt like real people, and the cinematography was phenomenal.
protest, hospital, restaurant, beach. four scenes that elevated this film to a 5 star, the protest scene made me really scared because cleo and teresa thought it was just a normal day, and i (and they) did not expect what would happen. the hospital scene is where yalitza aparicio truly shines, and reduced me to tears.
the restaurant scene also made me cry, it was just sad and beautiful at the same time. sofia had flaws, and ultimately became a strong mother for the kids as they were facing a different future. marina de tavira deserved her oscar nomination. and lastly, the beach scene made me cry too. cleo loved the two kids enough to risk her own life and face her fear and inability to swim, and when they hugged each other, i completely lost it. it made me think that the family and cleo could go through troubles as long they were with each other. it was just phenomenal, the fact cleo realized that she was loved by the family, and that she loves them just the same was the perfect conclusion.
this is now one of my all-time favorites. i would give anything to watch this film with fresh eyes and without spoilers. a certain thing was spoiled for me, which is why i put off watching this film, but it just hit hard to me when it happened. i really love this, what a perfect film.
