Cure
Roommates heard me ranting and raving about seeing it last night and wanted to watch and of course I had to oblige.
This time around I was interested in Mamiya’s choice of fire and water as his tools for hypnotism. Fire and water are both stable elements. They are unchanging, water will always flow and fire will always burn. However, in their stability they are chaotic. Meaning they are not consistent. Water will find new canals to explore in its flow and fire will flicker and dance. I think this chaotic stability is emblematic of Mamiya.
He is chaotically stable. He is without a sense of self, utterly egoless. He seemingly possesses no memories, or maybe no capability for memory. He is an utter blank slate, and in that sense is stable. Though in that stability is a chaos, an evil, lurking. His borderless ego allows him to intrude on others’ egos and his lack of memory makes him immune to any past. He uses this to push a cure.
Whether that is his own idea of a cure or something intrinsic inside every person that he is simply releasing is up to the viewer.
