Cure
I concur with Bong Joon-ho in feeling that this really may be the best film ever made.
Every single aspect of the film is pitch perfect. Every character is exactly what they need to be to make the story flourish, the editing is immaculate, the sound design is perhaps the most haunting and suffocating out there. The film is just under two hours and you don’t even feel a second of it. Maybe because we were the ones being hypnotized.
Did you notice the sound of Fumie’s dryer tumbling faintly during Oida’s interrogation? Or the prevailing white noise throughout? Certain opportune lighting fixtures? The flow of water? A pendulum swinging? I mean can we with 100% certainty say that any of the scenes after Takabe picks up the knife are objectively true. After all you see Fumie at the end with an “X” of her own cut into her throat.
Is there a cure? Or are we just as susceptible?
