A Clockwork Orange
Well I returned to this after two years. Sadly not as good as I made it out to be back then. It was in my top 3 back then, now it didn't even hit top 50.
Pacing lacked a bit as well. It's structure is great, but the runtime is way too long. It's just too slow at parts. It just feels rather bland at times and I was left feeling bored at times which was surprising since this was once one of my favorite films.
What I consider good of this film? I think the whole directing is fascinating. Kubrick is one of my favorite directors and he really just gives his all in this. I just have always loved his style in films. He's really a incredibly smart person. The shots are done so good and Kubrick makes sure every emotion is shown correctly within the actors.
Atmosphere is amazing. It has that uncomfortable and comfortable vibe to it at the same time. I mean what's happening is so uncomfortable, but the shots at times feel so ethereal and the lighting really creates this eerie atmosphere which I just love so much. I don't know if I'm the only one, but kind of reminds me of the atmosphere in Halloween 3.
Gotta say the soundtrack is amazing. It also creates part of the atmosphere. It fits and it feels unnatural. Perfect for this film and I don't know how good this film would have been without it. It definitely sets up the mood.
All the acts are rather fascinating in my opinion. They're are all structured so well. First act contains violence after violence, in second act the free will of Alex gets removed and in third act Alex strives to survive in society's shoes. It shows us all important three parts of Alex's journey in all three acts.
The message it spreads is great too. Is forced good really good at the end of the day? Is taking away free will to force good upon a person actually even doing them a favor? It just creates more conflict within yourself if you lose your own free will and I think this film shows it.
A Clockwork Orange is still great, but of course I'm a little sad it wasn't as good as before. At least I got around to rewatching this finally.
In my ranking of Stanley Kubrick
8.5
