American Psycho
A legendary film ruined by the "sigma" trend. Well I can still say this with confidence that this film is a masterpiece.
Let's start off with my only main negative. The consistensy. Second act 2A struggles to be consistent and second act 2B gets slightly better with consistensy, but still lacks that good pacing a bit. The whole second act is still great and offers so many iconic scenes, but nothing in comparable to the absolute perfection first and third act offers.
Now the positives. The protagonist, performances, atmosphere, directing, structure and the portrayal of a sick mind are all over the top.
Character like Patrick Bateman is just a perfect portrayal of a sick mind sharing both sociopathic and psychopathic traits with falling on that ADPD line. He sends out a great message to the world off how sick people can be in the head and it's even acted with oscar level acting.
Christian Bale does an absolutely fantastic job and it's by far the best performance he's given in his whole acting career. He acts this difficult role to play with ease. Patrick Bateman's character is so good all thanks to Bale.
The atmosphere is amazing. Directing offers great shots of New York and the night shots especially look so cool and fits the film's vibe so well. It feels such a vibe to watch this everytime especially at night.
Structure is also just great. The ending finally makes sense why Patrick got away with so many murders like the killing of the homeless man with no searches for killer (at least on screen) and when he killed the prostitute. She was quite literally yelling at every door meaning at least someone should have woken up. The ending really pulls it together with all the confusing events.
This satire and absolute masterpiece of a film is too overhated by it's fanbase and deserves way more recognition considering it succeeded in a lot of technical standpoints in filming.
An entry on my top 50
