Obi-Wan Kenobi
⚠️ 2nd Watch | Star Wars
DISCLAIMER: I WATCHED A 2-HOUR FAN EDIT FILM, NOT THE OFFICIAL SHOW
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a terrible show. Riddled with the worst chase scenes imaginable, bad performances, a horribly weak screenplay, and ugly cinematography, the show blatantly sucks. However, the two-hour fan edit by Pentex Productions is a much-needed improvement, refining the screenplay into a cohesive story with logical character development. This was achieved by eliminating filler, reordering scenes for smoother plot progression, and even eliminating an episode altogether.
Now, instead of reaching an entire episode to reach the inciting incident to kickstart Obi-Wan's rescue, it takes around twenty minutes. The events on Tatooine feel a lot less jumbled up, and in this fan edit, we are introduced to the villainous inquisitors immediately as well as their motives. And despite removing a lot of the show's runtime, the characters are compromised. In fact, given the way some scenes were reorganized, the character work in the film edit is superior to the official television version. For example, the film edit intercutting between Anakin and Obi-Wan's training session with Darth Vader and Obi-Wan's climactic fight adds an entire extra dimension to the fight.
Obviously, there were a lot of constraints that hindered the film edit from being good. The fight choreography is still poor, the cinematography is still bland, the soundtrack is still forgettable, and most of the performances are still weak. However, the film edit mends some of these downsides. The removal of filler also removes some of the weaker parts of the performances. Furthermore, the film edit occasionally uses John Williams' tracks like the Twin Sunset and The Battle of the Heroes to spice up the music. But still, there's only so much you can do with the fight choreography and cinematography. So, each scene with Vader is still blocked horrifically. The fights still look odd and goofy. Overall, there are still many problems with the film, but Pendex Productions' work at least made it watchable. In my eyes, the two-hour fan edit is the official version of this story. It's a better, more cohesive version of the same story that removes all of its atrocities that make it unwatchable.
