The Odyssey
Really, really good Nolan movie. It's shot beautifully throughout, has amazing performances from almost all the cast, a really good score on many scenes, and very good action sequences aswell as messaging.
The first half of this movie really takes you and shows you Odysseus' insane journey. From the first showing of Troy itself to the cyclops to the giants to the witch to Hades. All of these were well made and crafted sequences, however I did find myself questioning at some points what exactly the point was there, specifically the giant one, it just seemed there.. I understand it was to show just how hard the journey back to Ithaca was but if you wanted to show that there were a lot more examples in the book. Nothing was really creative about that. Other then that, the cyclops sequence was very well done with a slight hint of horror, the witch sequence genuinely had my jaw Open the whole time trying not to look away, and the hades sequence had amazing dialogue exchanges, particularly the one between Odysseus and Sinon.
Other then that in the first half, id like to say one thing i didn't like was the lack of the supporting characters, Penelope is only there a little, Antoneus is basically not there aside from the first scene, and Telemachus who was there the most, going to Melenaus was the best part aside from Odysseus, which shows other supporting characters having more screentime in exchange of cutting some of the extra scenes from Odysseus' island trips would've been better maybe.
Though saying that some of my absolute favourite scenes from the movie were the ones on the actual ship, in the storm, them basically showing it from the POV of Odysseus was so good and you felt the full sense of challenge and dread.
In terms of performances, all main cast was good, i genuinely liked all of the main 4(Odysseus, Menelachus, Penelope, Antoneus), and id actually say Matt Damon was the weakest one there, he was still really good, but there wasn't anything mind blowing from him relative to his amount of role he had. Tom Holland genuinely suprised me with how good he was, Anne Hathaway was obviously amazing, especially in emotional scenes, and Pattinson was obviously so good at being some sniveling cowardly guy. Even supporting performances like Eunelaeus, Calypso, Athena, absolute aura farmer Agamemnon and CIRCE(one of the best in the film) were really good.
Now for the second half of the movie, the second Odysseus gets back to Ithaca, the already great movie reached literal another level. The final 1 hour 15 or so of this movie is genuinely heavenly, with for me atleast, having all the actual emotion payoffs of the film. From Odysseus meeting Eunelaeus again to him giving back Antoneus the lot of Sinon to his reunion with Argus(one of the best scenes of the movie imo) to Menelaus realising it was Odysseus himself to Odysseus' conversation with Penelope as the beggar(best scene of the movie) the HOLY AURA scene of him stringing his bow and shooting through the axes to the final fight, to finally them going off into the sunset, literally every moment was peak.
The best scene defo was Oddyseus' conversation with Penelope as the beggar because of the different perspective it gives on the Trojan War. The move, the trick of “Trojan Horse” that has been glorified over and over again by people as a great achievement, showing the dark side of it from the perspective of the man who did it himself. Him realising that what he did was the ultimate breaking of Zeus' Law. That he broke humanity with the Trojan Horse, that the fall of Troy was the fall of the world itself. THEY were the “people from the sea”. So good.
My one last complain would be that the theme or score of this movie wasn't really close to the PEAK music of other Nolan films like Interstellar, Oppenheimer, Inception, etc. though it is still good.
Overall an amazing movie with an action packed first half and a genuinely heavenly second half with so many insanely good scenes.
