Batman Returns
Clear that DeVito is chasing the same kind of star performance high as Nicholson did in the last Batman, but the real star here is Burton’s newfound creative control over Batman Returns. Following his personal creative achievement of Edward Scissorhands, Burton has so much more confidence in his sensibilities, but, behind the scenes, Burton was also given much more of a say than his last outing with the caped crusader. No surprise then that Returns feels more Burton-y than Batman ‘89 and that, along with DeVito, Pfeiffer, and Keaton’s sexually pent-up performances, is probably why Returns just works so well.
