Django Unchained
Django Unchained is an absolute masterpiece.
Simply put, Quentin Tarantino made back-to-back perfect films. The feeling is equivalent to what Inglorious Bastards gave last night, in the sense, that for both I walked away with no complaints.
Quentin Tarantino clearly learned how much of an impact Bastards gave. He truly took a risk, and knocked it out of the park.
Django Unchained might be a greater risk. A risk that most white directors wouldn’t take. The first thing I want to tip my hat to Tarantino is not backing down from writing and directing this epic.
Django unchained is a stylistic presence to behold. Tarantino is one of the most stylistic directors ever, so that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to me anymore.
I was nervous because I don’t enjoy westerns, yet, Django Unchained is much more than that. With that said, Quentin Tarantino just introduced my first five star western.
The Costume and prop design may be Tarantino’s best yet. The western style outfits that the Jamie Foxx as a Freeman and Leonardo DiCaprio wear are incredibly cool.
Yet that may not even be the best aspect of the stylistic approach. The locations of shooting are absolutely iconic, and will likely be one of my major highlights from Django Unchained.
Another major proponent to every perfect Tarantino, is the perfect cast. Which if you think about it, Django easily takes the cake for his best cast to date.
I might even be comfortable saying that all around the board, Django Unchained has the best acting performances in any of his movies in the 2000s.
(Pulp is the best in all around performances)
Django Unchained features all of his major stars from his biggest films, here they play key roles again.
To me Jamie Foxx stole the show and gave his definitive career best performance. Everytime he spoke he demanded respect, and man did he ever turn into a widely respected and feared bounty hunter. He was intense and chaotic, yet planted and quite smart, Jamie Foxx portrayed all of these elements like they stack right on time of each other.
One of my favorite Tarantino characters ever, and Tarantino performances ever.
Other massively great performances: Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson.
To me all four of these main characters individually gave a top 3 performance in their acting careers.
Django is one of Tarantino’s best scripts, and not only is that due to the masterful dialogue, pure impact from the story, and world class acting. It’s also because of the sedating score…
Tarantino again, is one of the best at knowing the perfect song to play during any moment. Django Unchained is a testament to that fact.
I might have to say this is his best Score outside of Kill Bill.
To me, this is the movie that finally solidifies Tarantino as a rival to Paul Thomas Anderson, The man I see as the modern “master” of contemporary film. They are still very different, but in regards to creative capability, they are the two at the top.
Django Unchained is a cinematic masterpiece that will be bookmarked in history, as it is that impactful. Tarantino truly is a creative genius, Django Unchained is another perfect film.
At this point he has 4 films I would consider perfect.
