The Doom Generation
This film is the one I always show first for my “Intro to Gregg Araki” course. Not a course I actually teach at any legitimate establishment but it’s always the first one I show any of my friends, not only for the “what the fuck” factor but just for all the layers it has.
Every time I watch this film I find new things that make me understand the story even better. I also just adore the direction and acting in this. Gregg Araki does arguably his best job bar Mysterious Skin here. The chemistry between James Duval and Johnathon Schaech drives me up the wall and each time I get so damn excited when I think they’re going to kiss, but to no avail. Gregg Araki still manages to fool my ass with his “Heterosexual Movie” every time (They were actually in love, Amy Blue is a metaphorical character and this is a commentary on homophobia in America).
