Before Sunrise
"She was only 13 when she died. That meant something to me, you know? I was that age when I first saw this. Hm. Now I'm ten years older and she's still 13, I guess. That's funny."
Celine in this line (intentionally or unintentionally) captures the hidden magic in rewatching this film. I was their age when I first watched this movie, yet every time I return to it, they remain the same age.
When I first watched this movie in college, I identified so much with their free-spirited wanderings, honesty, and big ideas. While I still have a lot of ideas floating around, it's easier to stop questioning things as you grow older. Just as Celine unlocks a piece of herself looking at that gravestone, this movie can take you back to a time in your life and a mindset. I don't feel like either of these are gone, but they feel fleeting.
Jesse and Celine frequently talk about aging and death throughout this movie, and the context of the sequels only adds more depth to their conversations and makes everything feel more timeless.
Couldn't have found a better anniversary movie! :)
