WOW!!!! That movie had me stunned for probably half of the runtime.
It was incredibly simple; every scene was filmed in one of five rooms in a small house. There were only two actors that had screentime, every other actor was just a voice. Since the whole movie was set in such a confined space, the audience became very familiar with the layout and how everything was organized within the house. It was simple to notice when something was off.
This movie was tailored to the senses. The way it did that was by focusing on just one sense at a time. For example, if the movie wanted you to hear something, it would have a static closeup shot that allowed the audience to focus all of its attention on just the audio. The concept of applying this to characters doing a podcast was genius, that allowed key audio moments to be repeated and the characters to ask, “did you hear that?”
I saw this one in Dolby at the theaters, and the audio quality was more than spectacular. The way the audio surrounds you and literally shakes your chair is an unreal experience.
A lot of people will think my 4.5 star is high praise, but I really enjoyed how simple this film was. I didn’t have to memorize too many names, I knew the setting like the back of my hand, the characters were interesting, the plot was insistent and relentless, the story was original, and I always love a movie with fantastic sound design and THIS HAD THAT!!!
