Two Lovers
This movie quite literally feels like a loose modernized adaptation of Dostoevsky’s White Nights. Loved it but it made me sick to my stomach even though I anticipated the ending (Michelle and Leonard’s temporary lapse of romance coming to an end), mostly because Michelle is codependent and not in love with him. The saddest part was how happy Sandra was about the proposal—if anything, my heart broke for her. I love the way the entire thing was filmed, it seemed so melancholic yet warm for some odd reason. Michelle was just so detestable to me, sure Leonard is flawed but his cruelty to Sandra is of a quiet kind—it isn’t as outward as Michelle’s cruelty to him, nor is he as oblivious to his own actions in the way that she (Michelle) is. He wasn’t faithful to Sandra, but in my eyes his warped way of holding himself accountable was by proposing as a means to balance the scales.
