Amsterdam
Dreadful claustrophobic bloated amaturish atrocity that may not be the worst film of the year but damn is it giving Blonde a run for its money.
Amsterdam is the new overly righteous and obese Hollywood creature that makes you ask one more after a trillion many times, definitely longer then all the films combined in which this question is probed into our tortured braincells "Does Hollywood actually have humans running them?" Or are they possibly David Lynch monsters but that's given them to much of a artsy credit. Everything about David O. Russel's new film make the O in his name stands for maybe oppression, oppression for the audiences' thoughts and judgement, I think moviegoers no matter dedicated as long as they have watched one film actually know more about a film's language then they believe but its film like Amsterdam, build so equally stupid as to the contrary that punishes one for caring even if accidentally. Every actor is given a push in close up as a introduction in this like Russel going "OH LOOK WHO WE GOT HERE! YOU KNOW THEM! YOU KNOW THEM! YES WE HAVE THEM! ISN'T THIS THE MOST IMPORTANT FILM EVER!" Its eye catching for sure but is it worth the mediocre junk of 3 hours that this seems to have endless offerings of? Well unless you have no brain I'll say no, not one bit. Its a depressing almost funeral like experience seeing so many talent dedicated to such waste that they seem almost as stupid as the script to accept these hideous dialogue and almost non existent characterization and whatever they are given to such a degree that could be classify as such which in this mess is quite the luxury is already such a lazy insult to the audience its almost admirable they can stand being on screen for however long this picture drags on into hell and not leave the screen and never return which for them and the audience's sake may have been the best choice, atleast my nemesis Taylor Swift knows that and even if I despise her I do have to respect her early exit as the most and only fun I had and for maybe saving just a bit of self respect on her part as her performance is as pointless as her other form of expression. Bale, Robbie, Washington, Taylor Joy, De Niro, Malek, Myers, Rock, Olyphant, Shannon blah blah blah can only be mentioned as it seems the film only wants to use them as that, walking name and face that looks around and speak, in terms of their performances, its too embarrassing to talk about even for me and seeing it is like watching a trainwreck but in reverse as your admiration for these people and their craft drowns the tainted by a certain sense of disappointment and uncomfortably, is this really the worst they can do? Bale especially who has always been such a presence is completely sucked out of life in this and with Thor 4 I really want to know what is going on in his mind to accept so many horrible films and if you don't know it by now Amsterdam is one of them, think thats a bit obvious for me to point out well lets just say you are in for a nightmare with the actual film. Russel over explains, over indulgents, over delivers the lackluster and Amsterdam is soul crashing for that it has so little to give yet its dementedly demanding, the convulated screenplay begs not for a rewrite but a merciful witch burning with its nonsensical logic and random political edge that creeps in so suddenly and without notice its truly like a cheap jump-scare just in a narrative form and if shit. Russel's direction ain't better, as I mention the camera of the film is obsessed with what it has because in actuality it has so little besides the cast, most of the time it is so aimless I started to feel seasick. Digital zooms points out nothing and the shot starts nowhere and believe nothing it has to say, the look so expendable they should have just colored the film with stains as that's what the film and its burdensome experience feels like and walking out of the theater is one big clean up for the mind. Its annoying, tonally empty, crudely purposed and so desperately wants to justify its making it points to random messages that seems to come out of a trash bag and of course by making it so obvious and overstated it still ends up being nothing making time spent on it even more of a waste. I just wish Russel didn't take this seriously, just admit its indulgent fun, atleast thats sincere, Amsterdam in truth is a crime against time, the only part I liked was when De Niro and Bale shares the screen together which is too little anyways and of course how Swift goes out, again fantastic choice, the only one I might add in this otherwise total disaster. I wish it was forgettable but how fast it falls apart makes it unfortunately impossible, a mystery that has no edge, no danger, no allure, nothing, just how casually the characters act at the climax represents quite well the underwhelming and unurgent nature of the film, when it doesn't even believe its own desperation why should we and don't even start on the flashback and poor structure, I have to stop with this film for whatever little sanity I have left but needless to say the cast didn't and never would have had save this especially when its this bad and there is no taste to it, no bite and worst is not the ending or the middle but that the film started in the first place, if you are put in a horrifc situation either out of your control and you have to sit through this, just pray that your projector or TV fails, I should have done that but instead here I am, like going through a accident and wishing nothing more then regret and the worst thing is am sure with the generous money they are given, those poor cast and crew have nothing to worry about as their creative hell descend upon our precious eyes, protect yourself, its a real dangerous time of the year with this one hijacking the screen, atleast it will disappear away sometime in the future but my god, not soon enough.
