Mirror
I've been meaning to return to this for a while but I didn't expect this rewatch to really click with me this profoundly and now I believe Mirror is probably one of the most if not the most personal film ever made.
Have you ever heard of the idea that some films are made for a specific time in our lives? Some could resonate with you when you are younger but then loses its touch as your grow older and vice versa, Mirror feels like a film that was made for when you reach death and birth itself which resides in the unknown for all of us yet the film creates a mystifying bridge between our own mortality and our consciousness. If the concept of every good to great films needs to have a conflict is to be believed then Mirror's paints the picture of the conflict between our subconscious and our conscience all spread out among time, space and existence. Here Tarkovsky creates a film that feels not only personal to him but somehow to the audience as well and by the end the film leaves you on a intimately moving note, it's both reassuring yet permanent just like life itself. I really love it the second time around especially after having seen all of Tarkovsky's films, it's a hypnotic journey into cinema's relationship to our soul that leaves you dreaming and pondering long after the picture fades back into its domain. What more can I say then I was blown away by this rewatch and I not only appreciate the film more but actually enjoyed and engaged with the whole experience, not my favourite Tarkovsky but certainly very near the top, this is cinema at it's most blessed yet moving.
