The Beatles: Get Back
Intended originally for the silver screen, Peter Jackson's Get Back thanks to Disney Plus rightly turned into a 8 hour mini series epic that gleefully reval in its beatlemania yet give a fascinating glimpse into the joy and hardships of the creation of the some of the best pieces of music ever performed. Tracing 60 hours of footage and 100 plus hours of audio recording, Jackson definitely has a daunting task to fulfilled both for the legacy of the band as well as deconstructing the myth around this very session and thankfully he definitely serve the landing with this one. I have seen the original Let It Be film and to get straight to the point Get Back is the ultimate replacement for that film and much of that is of course due to Jackson's involvement, unlike the 1970 80 minute feature Jackson give us the length to fully feel at home with these other wise other worldly figures of pop culture and the balance between pacing and patience is just enough to both satisfy the most devoted of Beatles fans and more general audiences. It does feel a little too long and even though the structure of the dates works extremely well I still feel somewhat like its a artifact of the shorter feature length version, I just feel this needed a little more glue to fully hold it more tightly but the final result is still engaging nonetheless. Its never boring per say just more tiring at times especially if you are binging it like me so I do recommend watching it by stretching it out a bit as at worst it does feel a little too repetitive at times but its positives definitely out way any flaws it has. For a 8 hour beast it remains captivating, moving, hilarious, exciting and inspiring throughout and creates in my opinion a perfect detail portrait of the Beatles' creative process especially during that time, I think a lot of people especially fans will have a lot of fun with this. I wouldn't call it the masterpiece everyone is saying it is, sure of course I wish Jackson would push his filmmaking a bit more to truly make this just more then a simple fan edit or expansion of the original film and yes I do wish it was cut down a bit and given more room to truly be itself if you know what I mean both cinematically and aesthetically but getting to spend 8 hours with one of the most influential bands in the world will always be essential and by the end I did leave rightly and pleasingly smiling so I do recommend it especially those who love the Beatles or the creative process from the biggest most iconic moments to the little charming details that brings a true genuine loving sense of humanity to these 4 talented lads from Liverpool.
