Scarface
Quintessentially 80s
Maybe I’m inclined to like it being a Miami Cuban, this movie here has the legendary status in everyone that rappers love to give it.
Forgot how great Pacino’s performance was, how much he completely blows everyone out the water here. I watched it with some friends and apparently, tho i don’t notice it, Tony sounds just like my dad.
Also the first watch where I realized Stone wrote it, and maybe because of that I finally paid attention to just how political the film is, even if it’s in an odd sometimes very contrived way (the restaurant scene is iconic and a great speech but can’t find a scene before that where the quiet evil of the general population was developed).
I love the hypocrisy of Tony in the New York scene, “no women, no children,” as though the first job we saw him work as a free man didn’t involve the death of a woman (though I guess not directly by his hand). It comes off to me as already a job Tony just didn’t wanna do, and his self destructive tendencies which are a big part of the last hour take over completely.
Remember watching as a kid and thinking “wait you can kill your friends?” at Manolo’s final scene, which is heartbreaking here. And Pacino’s eyes in this scene, his brain is totally fried and his face seems frozen numb but his eyes tell everything.
