The Thing
I’ve been watching way too many bad movies lately, and I needed a rewatch of something really good. So, I decided to revisit this film, which I’ve been wanting to do for a while. This movie is truly perfect in every sense of the word. So fucking good, man. It’s ahead of its time, and it blows my mind that critics hated it. But honestly, I think critics are cancer to cinema.
This film features some of the most impressive, gnarly, and downright disgusting practical and prosthetic effects I’ve seen. The fact that it was this good back in 1982 is insane. It still holds up so well and has some of the best prosthetic work I’ve seen. It’s aged like fine wine. The main theme is so simple, yet so damn effective. I just love it. That tune is stuck in my head. Boom… boom…
And the set design is incredible. It really sells that they’re in this remote, snowy place and that they’ve been there for a while. It gives off a cozy vibe despite the cold. I think it’s the perfect time to watch this since we’re finally reaching that climate. I love how it doesn’t waste time building up, it gets right to the point and is relentless, intense, and very suspenseful. such a great classic.
