Interstellar is a fascinating and brilliant sci fi film. It’s also a great drama. Christopher Nolan is easily one of my favorite directors ever and his style really comes to life in this movie. Matthew McConaughey gives his best performance here in my opinion, and the supporting cast is also great. Hans Zimmer again proves himself as the composer closest to John Williams. The score is loud and lengthy for sure (not a complaint I freaking love it) but it’s so fantastic to pair with these events and characters. And what’s great about the events is that you care about both sides. There are some films where we like being in one place and once we go to another we get bummed out. This movie presents both settings and conflicts as interesting, emotional, and watchable and that’s highlighted even more when they’re intertwined. It also takes elements from 2001 (which I think is growing on me the more I think about it) where you see this character interact with technology and get mixed up in some weird space stuff and go into a weird time-space portal. Wacky for sure, but amazing. This is also one of the best looking movies I’ve ever seen. These visual effects are insane and look so real. Whether you’re talking about the snowscapes or the wormhole sequence, the designers really gave it their all here.
I’m not sure how much I really understand of the last 10 minutes and of all the sciencey stuff, and the stuff with Matt Damon really doesn’t work for me, but I can’t deny the raw talent, effort, and quality that was put into this film.
