I am torn on how to rate this movie in one hand this movie has a minor flaw charles muntz is a one dimensional villan that is not worthy of a 5 star rating like syndrome or death but on the other hand this movie is spectacular its the most i have ever cried while watching a movie it has funny moments and carl is an amazing protagonist.
The emotinal moments in this movie hit you like a truck i watched this movie because of the escape pod podcast wafelow said its a great movie while hat guy says its ok so i decided to embark on my pixar journey i didnt really remeber the plot and it didnt leave a big impact on me as a kid so i decided to watch it and holy shit is it an excellent movie by the 10 minute mark i was full on sobbing that story between carl and ellie is THE BEST LOVE STORY IN FICTION its so tragic and by the hospital scene i was fully sobbing the rest of this movie is really underrated and it is not far off in terms of its level from the first 10 minutes throught the movie i think it held on really strong and didnt drop off from its amazing start russel is annoying at the start but by the end he grew on me kevin is not really my cup of tea and so is dug but they are still great side characters but all of those things dont matter when the underlying message of this movie is so amazing, learning how to let go.
This movie excells because of carl being so hung up on his house because the house is the only thing he has left of ellie and with a little bit of pixar magic its easy to see that ellie's spirit lives in the house and so throught the movie we see carl trying to relaise their dream by going to paradise fallls because he thinks that what ellie would've wanted so he the house(ellie's spirit) to paradise falls so he could grant her final wish in his eyes(so freaking sadddd) but when they get there he relaises that ellie had her adventure and she fullfiled her life because she was with him and her final wish was for him to have a new adventure without her so he leaves everything behind slowly getting rid of the furntiure and by the end losing the house so he could save russel and start his new adventure with him and what truly had me full on sobbing was the ending when we see the house in paradise falls and therfore ellie's spirit having her life finally fullfilled at paradise falls.
This movie is about processing loss and learning how to let go a beautiful message that is executed perfectly in this movie.
if i would ever have a daughter i would name her ellie because her character resonated with me so much and i would never forget her.
Is it a perfect movie? no it has flaws but i cant help but overlook them because the pros are so big theyre impossible to ignore 9.7/10.
