Napoleon
I genuinely don't think there's any other movie made in past 97 years that can compare to this. I mean that as such a compliment like holy shit. Here's how I'd break down my experience with this 5 1/2 hour long beast of a silent film:
The first 3 hours is a 5/5 melodramatic masterpiece of montage editing and musical motifs that got me seriously considering this for one of my all-time favorite movies. There are incredible shots throughout the entire movie, but here some of the cinematography is especially breathtaking, with painting-like stills that rival the best of what you see today.> Though after Napoleon's victory in Toulon, we get a sort of break in the story, and for the next 2 and a half hours the movie starts to feel it's length. At this point, of course, I was invested, and it was still pretty damn good regardless, but it felt like something was missing. Some really fucking great action set pieces in a town called Toulon perhaps.Anyways I would say go watch this, but it's quite literally one of the most notoriously difficult movies of all time to watch. As if it was bad enough that it's 5 1/2 hour long silent film, you also:
- can't rent it or buy it on any streaming service> - can't you buy it on Blu-ray, DVD, or VHS> - can't watch it for free on Youtube or Internet Archive> - can't watch it in any way, shape or form outside of some russian website I found that had itSo if you find it on that sketchy russian website, or if you catch a flight to Paris to see it at a special screening in its extended 7-hour cut with a live orchestra sometime in July, then please let me know what you thought of this insane, near-masterpiece of a movie.
