why i decided to watch this after watching climax i really couldn't tell you, this is why you watch movies going in blind, before watching this i thought this was a way more of a body horror fest than a psychological "romance", i was wrong, i was always intimidated by it because i thought it'd be a way more graphic, torture porn movie, but its not, the cover and the reputation really mislead you, its way more heartfelt than gross and graphic, i mean even knowing the twist and genre i fucking loved it so much like, this might be the best body horror ive ever watched
i would say i enjoyed it, but i dont think "enjoy" would be the right term for explaining how i feel about this, i did enjoy the first hour and 30 minutes and was really interested in the plot, it was kinda slow and i was anticipating the ending, this film builds on anticipation and suspense, and i completely understood what miike was trying to do, looking at the cover and knowing the reputation you're just anticipating for the fucked up shit to happen, and when it doesn't you're even more tense, but when it does, man...
i only really have one "complaint", and whats holding it back from being a perfect 10/10, the story gets a little convoluted at end but like, it might be my fault for trying to understand what was going on too hard, but the rest of the story is mostly linear and if miike decided to explain the film, i probably wouldn't like it as much, i hate when shit is too on the nose about stuff, but with this film i was pretty lost, but that's the point, there are definitely different interpretations, i have my own but im still pretty confused, aside from that i loved everything else, especially the transitions and editing, the 2 main characters are amazing in this film, the relationship between aoyama and his son is so heartfelt
although i think the fly is more sad and has way better practical effects, this film just hits harder personally, and the body horror is much more effective in this film, both kind of have similar structures, they're both slow burn "romances" with crazy ass endings, but i just found the ending to this film more effective and invokes way more emotion out of me while watching it, surprisingly not very much gore, but still amazing body horror and really disgusting sound design
this is something im probably not touching for a while, its gross, disturbing, kind of scary, kind of sad, its confusing at times, but it is a masterpiece, it'll only grow on me as time goes on, asian cinema fucking rules and this is a prime example of that, ive never been so tense watching something probably ever, do not watch this if you're squeamish, this is a girlboss david lynch esque film, how would i not love this, if you're a big horror fan who wants to see a girl fuck shit up, this is for you
