Mysterious SkinPhoenix9.0· August 13, 2025Follow“I wish there was some way for us to go back and undo the past. But there wasn’t. There was nothing we could do. “ Absolutely incredible, easily one of my new favorite films. It’s raw, disturbing, and somehow beautiful in the way it explores memory, truth, and the different ways people cope with what happened to them. It tells a story with such honesty, never hiding away from the ugliness, while embracing all the closeness and sadness that comes with it. Such a good representation. What hit me most was how Neil and Brian’s paths reflected two sides of the same coin. Neil confronting it directly, and moving forward. while Brian’s mind hid the past and created another story to protect himself. Trauma blocking everything from his mind. The alien abduction belief, and what it REALLY stood for, was just heartbreaking. The performances are perfect, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was so amazing in his role that it’s almost unsettling. The cinematography and shoegaze music make the whole thing feel nostalgic and real, making the movie hit even harder. It’s the kind of film that will linger in my head forever, not only because of how depressing it was, but because I understood so deeply how Neil felt. I usually enjoy watching movies like this, and they don’t bother me, but this one in particular makes me feel sick whenever I think about it. Which is exactly why it’s so good and stands differently from the rest.CommentsSign in to react and join the conversation.Sign inGet the appSee all Phoenix's reviews for Mysterious Skin (3)First watch9.0August 13, 2025Rewatch 19.0August 22, 2025Rewatch 210.0November 22, 2025
