Superman
I will start off by saying that this is incredibly biased because of themes that felt very personal to me, which could explain why I'm rating it so high.
I think that James Gunn has been carefully sweeping away the heavy, dark and gloomy screens we've been getting for superhero movies since TDK (amazing one of course, but has pushed directors towards realism maybe to a fault). I believe if a comic book was to be turned into a movie, this would be exactly how it should be done. The camera work, color grading and scoring were all fantastic at enhancing the comics feel to it.
Superman is touching, vulnerable, human, emotional and kind. His conflicts and debates with various characters brought a warmth to him that I wasn't aware of (as I am not well versed in the DCU).
It made me root for him as more than a simple superhero, but as a representation of the sliver of hope that is this new generation.
Yes, Superman is political. And some might not like that. And, yes, maybe it is a bit too on the nose, but comic books have always been so. It was a bold move to release this in today's America and I thank Gunn for it.
A small detail I personally enjoyed as someone used to the MCU :
I appreciated how Superman interacted with the world around him all throughout ; the civilians, the journalists, the police, the prisoners, the buildings and roads. He felt grounded into Metropolis, everything he did interacted with his environment and had a clear impact on them. And the consequences would be pointed out too!
It's paving the way for brighter superhero portrayals. It brings you back to the roots, back when one would save the day just "because".
This movie was honestly a delight. Just sit back and enjoy a fun watch. I simply can't wait for the second one!
