Gummo
“Life is beautiful. Really it is. Full of beauty and illusions.”
Gummo is unlike anything you’ve seen before. It is dark and gritty but also full of absurdity and occasional comedic moments. It is an amazing examination of decay and society as a whole, showing a realistic side of American society that is often completely ignored. The characters are often strange yet sympathetic, with a strong sense of loneliness and living through a world of moral decay and isolation.
This is definitely not for everyone. But I think if anyone is interested in seeing this they should, Harmony Korine has created one of the most unique and interesting examinations of life and society here that remains interesting throughout with unforgettable sequences and characters.
Overall, Gummo is one of the best looks as societal decay and isolation out there, combining disturbing subject matter with humour and humanity. Highly recommended!
