Alien
After rewatching this film (first time seeing the director’s cut) I’m honestly shocked why I never initially gave this a 10/10. Cause in all honesty, this is as perfect as films can get!
Everything worthy of this film’s high renown has been discussed for decades so I won’t rehash much. However I will say, seeing this film again gave me a new philosophical perspective I never once caught on.
The xenomorph’s design and characteristics are a clear allegory for rape. The disturbing idea that a face hugger violates and impregnates you without your knowledge, leading to you dealing with the unplanned and devastating consequences. It is a very disturbing and violent depiction of these destructive actions, taken place in a film surrounded by nail biting suspense!
The fear of the unknown has never been captured more vividly! The opening moments are cold, mysterious and leaves you uneasy. This tone setter only gives you a taste of the mystery and constant dread you’re about to experience for the rest of the runtime! And this concept of dread lurking through mystery is beneficial through the alien’s lack of screen time! The imperfections of the alien’s design are mostly hidden through Ridley Scott’s constraint to show the monster.
Even though I vividly remember all of the sequences in this film, I felt even more tense than I could recall from previous showings. I don’t expect Romulous to top this in any aspects but I am glad I finally rewatched this with a fresh perspective and version of the film!!
