Running Scared
Things I absolutely love about Running Scared:
The opening montage which gives me a deep feeling of nostalgia for the Chicago of my childhood.
The stance Gregory Hines takes in his long underwear shooting at their stolen “unmarked police car”.
Absolutely everything that comes out of Dan Hedaya’s mouth. God I love that guy in everything he does.
Billy’s impersonation of Hedaya on the phone with evidence.
Everything about the Key West sequence. Especially when they first get there and watch their first sunset. It makes me think about something we talked about growing up in Chicago- if only the lake was to the west instead of to the east. Then we’d be a city that watches sunsets instead of sunrises and maybe we would all be a bit more chill.
The guys returning from key west and roller blading across Wabash.
The L car chase. The Thompson center climax.
The brilliant chemistry of Hines and Crystal and how perfectly written the one liners are. So many times I giggle watching this movie but maybe none better than “we drink enough to make ourselves rich.”
My favorite buddy comedy and ultimate comfort flick. Of course it’s not a perfect movie and it’s certainly not “transcendent art”. But it gives me so much joy and I will watch it a dozen more times before I die.
