The Wrestler
“You hear them? This is where I belong.”
I love this movie so much. Obviously there’s bias here because I also love pro wrestling so much, but this is genuinely an amazing movie that anyone can enjoy.
Seeing Randy the Ram, an icon that defined the 80’s turn into a wrestler struggling to make ends meet in the present day is heartbreaking to see. Watching his life change after a match where he is forced to call off the one thing in his life that he is barely hanging on to is upsetting.
This makes me think about all wrestlers that this may have happened to, where they can’t afford to give up wrestling because it’s all they have. Wrestling in front of tiny crowds for only a $50 paycheck to afford rent is a sad reality that many wrestlers go through and this movie really hits hard on that.
Rowdy Roddy Piper said he broke down crying because of this film and I can see why. This is a depressing movie about pro wrestling and self destruction, highlighting the reality of pro wrestling for most wrestlers in the business. Still, I recommend this movie to be seen by everyone. It is a great movie that made me emotional at multiple points while watching, one of my favorite movies ever.
