Babylon
"What the fuck"
What the fuck were the words that left my mouth when I walked out of that theater. What the fuck were the words I was repeating throughout the entire film. What the fuck are the perfect words to explain this movie.
Not only was Babylon the most shocking and craziest movie of the year, but it was also one of the best movies of the year, and I will stand for that. I loved everything about this movie. I just recently wrote a review about The Fabelmans explaining how this is why I love movies. Babylon did it wholly but again amped it up to 110%. Babylon is everything I love about movies and more.
The first 30 minutes of the movie throw you into this crazy coke-filled movie that is balls to the walls insane. It was shocking how this could go from you laughing your ass off to being terrified to being sad and emotional. It is ridiculous the number of emotions it can hit you with, but it does just that. When people say that this movie is insane, they are not lying like they usually do. This movie is insane but in the most beautiful and best ways possible. My favorite film parts were in the first hour and a half. The 2nd act of the movie has its highlights for sure, but the 1st and 3rd acts are brilliant. Toby Maguire is the scene stealer of the year for me. He plays a terrifying, terrifying man, and in a particular part, my friend told me this isn't even a horror movie. It's going into one of the most frightening things he has ever seen. That says a lot.
All of the performances were brilliant. The real standouts for me were Margot Robbie and Diego Calva. They played their parts perfectly, and I would not be upset if they decided to hand the awards to them. I also saw that the ending was divisive for many people. You either love it, or you hate it. It worked perfectly, and I loved it. I even teared up a bit—great last scene.
God, there's so much I want to say about this movie, but I can't say enough without spoilers. All I will leave you with for right now is this was nothing like I expected. This film is what I love about cinema. I loved every single second that was being projected on the great, bewildering silver screen.
