technically watched this beforehand, but rewatching it with solely focusing on joy + jobu tupaki’s fragmented identity as a result of generational trauma and racial expectations, made me love it on a new level.
i don’t think there was a full five minutes that didn’t involve me crying. i advise everybody to look at the original ending of the play in comparison to this adaptation!!
this hit close to home. LOVED the imagery and motifs— especially of prison bars throughout the film. starting with jimmy hiding in the shadows during chucho’s death under the bridge, foreshadowing jimmy feeling internally imprisoned by his resentment towards the system, and also when he goes to prison for the second time as he never felt truly liberated from the enforced mentality of being a criminal in association to his cultural background.
watched it for this class, and rewatched it again afterwards, i loved analyzing monk + stagg r. leigh (i did this at the same time as rewatching for joy + jobu tupaki in eeaao)
was never really a fan of musicals but man were there some bops. this also hit close to home
