Bullitt
Watched Dirty Harry last time and now watching this because of Quentin Tarantino’s book, Cinema Speculation, so I can really understand what he says about the films he talks about, and yeah, so far he’s been spot on with movie recommendations.
In the book, Quentin loves talking about McQueen and how he really engulf the screen in this picture despite having very few lines. He says that McQueen was “one of the last movie stars.” What Tarantino means by this, is that although McQueen’s bullitt character is quite memorable, people will remeber McQueen for how he was on the screen. McQueen was a star that transcended the characters he played, he was an essence. This is something you cannot say about big franchise films now.
Now onto more what I thought. Yeah it was Stellar. In this journey of watching more films from he decades of the 60s and 70s, nd really just films all together, I find myself continually amazed on how the films effortlessly entertain me. This isn’t to say at all that modern movies don’t entertain, (I actually consider myself a defender of modern films and think they get too much hate). I’m just saying the entertainment then, is different now, and it’s always refreshing to switch from different decades and know you’re going to get something different every time.
My one other thing I want to talk about is the car chase. I had never heard about this chase scene ever before in my entire life until I read Tarantino’s chapter of him talking about bullitt, and so naturally I begin looking more into the film because in the book he explains the film as if its the holy grail. Multiple times, again and again, I keep hearing about this chase scene and how it’s miraculous and while this gets me even more excited for the film I also thought that since its a 60s film then there has to be better car chases.
No all of you were right the chase is top 3 GOAT
One last thing I noticed is the quietness of this film. I could have a great conversation about McQueen’s character for hours, but the film itself feels so quiet and so action packed at the same time. It’s almost like a quiet before the storm. That’s how I’d best explain it.
Anyway I’m blabbering but yeah.. fuck yeah this film is awesome 93.5/100
