Sinners
I hope more than anything that sinners represents a resurgence of blockbuster original films in film history.
Combining the likes of blaxploitation, horror, and period times, sinners gives the viewer an absolute thrill of a ride that many people born in the 70s and later forget these types of crazy ass movies coming around at the time.
I can't help but also think of Tarantino when it comes to this film. So much, from the genius use of dialogue, to the music filled badass scenes, I am sure that Ryan Coogler took much from the directing legend. Tarantino wasn't the only director I saw in Sinners. As you may know, Christopher Nolan greatly helped Coogler with the IMAX cameras being handled during production, leading to that huge aspect ratio we get when real shit is about to go down. not only this, but I saw that the use of editing was greatly inspired by the likes of Nolan's films, that of which I saw a great appreciation for.
most importantly though, through all of the inspirations this film took, what Sinners does not forget to do is have originality. films that are original (meaning not sequals, reboots, or largely based off a book or other type of media) always take from past stories, but with a twist. all the great directors are influenced by those before them, including Ryan Coogler. The problem is, Hollywood has forgotten to take risks and make these oroginal movies, instead falling back on reboots and remakes. Hopefully Sinners will mark an uprise in the industry, because I sure am seeing some movies with quite original soties coming out now, that makes me very hopeful.
