The I find more and more over the years that works that have gained the denomination of “pretentious” tend to just be “stuff that’s really good”.
I like pretentious things
Though I do have a sort of personal definition of pretentious. For me pretentious does not mean good or bad necessarily it mostly is a title given to things that are trying something. When I say something, I really do mean something it really can be anything. things get labeled as pretentious for a variety of different reasons, but it usually tends to be something truly new.
Not the antichrist is some entirely unique new enigma exhibit A: “dedicated to Andrea Tarkovsky” in credits Lmao (which I must add, I think is hilarious in the best way). What those new things that antichrist is doing I can’t really say just yet, but I have not liked a narrative OR approach more than this in a while.
Long story long like Godard before him Von Trier (in my humblest of opinions) is stepping on some pretty fresh ground here.
Maybe narrative doesn’t suck I guess?
