Dogville
For all of the vertigoes and blade runners of the world, and the countless decade upon decades of film movements that might as well morally stand as a monolith of oppression against the feminine people of the world it very much does light a warm fire in my heart to know that a film like Dogville exists.
I while it is a rape revenge tale It doesn’t just stop at saying sexual violence is Heynis. the film demonstrates through the town that it is also the systems that uphold this sexual violence, and that allow it to exist from all parties involved that is just as important as a dressing and discussing. Basically the film (THANK GOD) is looking at the issue of systemic violence from men against feminine people as a fundamental, systemic, and foundational problem instead of being the fault of a few bad actors or persons in society.
And what does this film put forth as the solution to this problem? To burn it to the ground. Revolutions are brutal and so is this film and as it damn well should be. Not that I take pleasure in seeing the violence on the screen but I think it’s very topical and shows the ethical and moral position This film is operating from and it’s stance on the nature of revolution and enacting significant situational or societal change can be well… to put it lightly unpleasant. Now I COULD ( and very easily) start going on about the themes of capitalism and exploitation and labor that this film also and so eloquently, touches on as well and how that all relates back to and is fundamentally, interconnected, and intertwined with its patriarchal themes and Marxism and revolution in a greater more broad sense and bla bla bla but that’s probably for a rewatch( honestly, if I did, I could probably make this my longest review ever) . But the fact that it is there, and it is talking about all these things, and from what I can tell a very eloquent position. I must say I quite fancy this film.
Notice how I’ve not talked about the stage play assembly of the production design at all as I think it may be largely inconsequential or very important. I haven’t come to the conclusion myself yet. a very interesting experiment nonetheless. But I think I will also leave that aspect to a rewatch review as well.
As for Dogville, bravo Ms Von Trier bravo🎩☕️
