Cloverfield
In a time where found footage was being used as a gimmick, Matt Reeves and JJ Abrams brilliantly crafted a film entirely in secrecy, and using the format as a means to tell a Godzilla sized story.
Cloverfield has, and always will be, one of my favorite films ever made - one that has some of the best viral marketing I’ve ever seen, and one of the coolest and most niche communities online. I miss coming home from high school and immediately hopping on the subreddits to see if anyone had found any clues about where the ARG was going next.
Participating in the ARG for these films is a blast, and brings back so many memories. It also adds a lot of new and complex layers (albeit unneeded) to the film, and just overall makes it even more interesting. It’s a very short but extremely effective film, and one of the best found footage films ever made. I love it so much. Can’t wait for the next one, whenever that is. Happy 14th Anniversary, Cloverfield ❤️🗽
