Cloverfield
“You have to learn to say forget the world, and hold on to those you care about the most.”
Had to watch one of my favorite films ever tonight. Matt Reeves and JJ Abrams crafted a film so iconic, the marketing may be what it’s most remembered for, but I think it’s easy to forget just how perfect this really is as a whole.
Cloverfield is a giant, kaiju-disaster film told in the smallest way possible. Such a clever idea that further turned a gimmicky, relatively cheap and trendy format, into a captivating way to show and tell a story. Beyond that, it feels so horrifically real, despite it being obviously fiction at its core. The characters are all so personal and interconnected that you truly wish them the best and don’t want any of them to perish in the attack.
A claustrophobic, creative, and most important - genuinely terrifying experience that only makes you more anxious the further in the story you go. Sometimes what isn’t shown only makes what is shown even scarier, and this film masters that perfectly.
It’s not just one of the best found footage films ever made, I’d even consider it the best overall. My personal favorite, at least, easily. Can’t recommend it enough to anyone who hasn’t seen it before. Was telling someone about it today and just how much it meant to me, and just made me want to rewatch it again tonight. I’m glad I did, its been too long.
Also Rob’s Party Mix has some BANGERS.
