Star Wars
I feel like it’s incredibly easy to forget that originality, or at least, the mere concept of it isn’t necessarily 100% rooted in a set of themes, concepts, or an overall story itself sometimes, but rather how exactly said story is told. The same concept I feel applies to The Force Awakens all these years later too.
There is no better example of this than Star Wars. A staple of American cinema and a film so incredible it both revolutionized and re-contextualized the idea of the blockbuster.
It’s rooted in so many classic elements of the western, the Hero’s Journey, classic Flash Gordon serials…and so much more. Yet, despite Lucas’ passion for so many areas of inspiration, he managed to craft something that feels wholeheartedly, unapologetically unique, and entirely different.
There’s so many reasons why this film is so special to myself and so many others, but I’ll just end with this: the force will be with us all, always.
