Blade Runner
I got a chance to revisit this due to a project on your favorite movie that we watched during the golden age and on.
I forgot how brilliant this film was. It shows the hopeless future of 2019 where everything is artificial, the lives of everyone is meaningless. What was once humanity has been lost in crap hole LA.
Can you picture this for me? You're forced to work day and night without anyone or anything being told you are less than human. You are nothing to them. You are held captive by your master and killed when you rebel.
I just described life for people in Indian Ocean Slave Trade, Transatlantic Slave Trade, Trans-Saharan Slaves, Arab slaves, and plenty more. The film shows and asks the question of what is a human. Is it the times I cry, the times I'm angry? People like Rick are so used to having emotions and life they don't appreciate it at all. Rick thinks about the Replicants the same as slave owners think of their slaves. Or how Nazi guards thought of Jews. He only realizes everything he did wrong when he watches Roy reminisce on his short life and how he won't ever live because he's different all of his pain is not heard “Like tears in the rain”.Only then Rick truly appreciates his life, quitting his false artificial life and leaving it behind forever.
It's only once we lose our humanity that we can experience true human emotions and appreciate what we have.
