Blade Runner
Outdated review btw
"Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little." - Luke 7:47
Part I: More Human than Human
You could say that even from the beginning we humans have wanted to be above others. From sticks and stones, our monkey brains fought and killed people for dominance. That need for dominance stayed with us ever since we grabbed that stone to then pick up our gun where millions turned into slaves. This has always been met with backlash as wars and countries have been torn apart over this but
what if it couldn't be changed? What if we couldn’t fight back?
This is the bleak future Blade Runner presents with the replicants killing people to escape the hell placed on them. Since Replicants and humans are so different right? They are judged by their labels, not by their character where the first thing we are given about them is
“Replicants were superior in strength and agility, and at least equal in intelligence, to the genetic engineers who created them. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets.
After a bloody mutiny by a NEXUS 6 combat team in an Off-world colony, Replicants were declared illegal on Earth — under penalty of death.
special police squads — BLADE RUNNER UNITS — had orders to shoot to kill, upon detection, any trespassing Replicants.”
Before we would send human slaves for the greater good now we were sending replicants to do our work. So being born and treated in these conditions paints Roy's entire existence from the fear of being a slave, to the small dove of hope that he could extend his life and change the world around him. So of course..

the angels don't rise anymore in 2019 they fall… as they flush away in the never-ending rain. Roy is sucked in as he searches for his meaning other than being a tool in a draining world. By craving his path and freedom his retirement follows close behind.
As Deckard closes in on him and his friends one at a time. Shooting and killing the only things he has. While he sees the scattered morals of “people” are gone as the law and reasons become ever so devise and different.
He sees how much they were used. Replicants like Pris are being reduced to a basic pleasure model for military clubs. While he fights the wars for others in a constant state of fear. He’s seen the real world as it's constantly building on a crumbling foundation. That foundation is him.
These limitations on what he can do are what made Roy value and realize his fear that his short life is ending as it ticks away that he holds on to as he meets his maker.
His way of obtaining life would eventually fail as he learns he cannot stop the death that chases him just like us. Tyrell created him with intelligence and emotions but regulated him into nothing, he could have been given freedom. He could have been something greater. Which in turn destroys him as he crushes his father's skull.
Soon he learns that his love Pris and his last reason to live is killed by the hunter trying to put him into his cage. With his vulnerability and love fueling his hate he slowly devolves into an animal as his life ticks away he stabs himself trying to feel something.
While still playing with Deckard stalking him as he gains the upper hand emerging holding onto the last bit of hope. When he wins the battle by watching the man who took nearly everything from him, Deckard hangs from his death but in the end...
He forgives him.
Now you're probably confused about why I added the quote from the bible. Because in a way Roy is a broken version of Jesus. Where God has been killed and replaced by technology only Roy could come out of those ashes. In that story from what I remember Jesus is at the home of Simon who is extremely strict about his religion “Judaism”. When a prostitute bursts into his house weeping because of what she has done and is touching him and begging for remorse for her sins.
Simon then criticized Jesus for even allowing her to touch him. So He responds with a short hypothetical situation where 1 person owed a little bit of money to a debtor and the other owed a whole lot. And if the debtor forgave both of them of what they owe, who would love the debtor more?
The one who owes a lot of course just like this woman who has many sins yet is forgiven by God. It shows that those who recognize what sins they have committed and are forgiven, show love
.
That's what I see in Roy even though Deckard killed his friends he helped him even if he did not deserve it just like that prostitute. He shows that maybe they aren’t at all that different and that maybe he can show him that he has faith in humanity even when he wasn’t given any.
In turn, Deckard realizes what he has done and the damage he caused while Roy reminisces in the greatest monologue ever put on screen
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion...
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.
All those moments will be lost in time,
like tears in rain...
Time to die.”
Where he dies a human death because he knew his death was coming. He knew that he would amount to nothing. He knew that his dreams would never be real. He knew that millions would still be regulated to slaves for years. He saw all of this in a matter of moments yet he’s at peace hoping Deckard will see him for what he truly is,
while slowly washing away in the rain…
“Since to forgive is more powerful than to hate”
Part II: Blade Runners in 2023
“A new life awaits you in the off-world colonies,
the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure.”
Do you ever feel all of your dreams and aspirations dangle above you? You watch as other people fail and that maybe you'll be different,
maybe you'll grab it.
Just maybe you can become greater than what you are now.
This is the message that looms above LA constantly where the fires rage as the city forever changes with the nature that created us being consumed and turned into a polluted wasteland. As neon lights blinding everything below it. The only safe space is high in the air along with the rich. The same ones who play that message over you.
As we descend deeper into LA we see “a tool” for this society read a newspaper as Deckard is forced into another job to stop a group of rogue “replicants”... again. The line between humans and robots becomes ever so thinner with the rise of AI that can mimic us. You probably didn’t even notice that there were certain sentences in this very review with GPT for example but where it is doesn't matter, it's the fact that you didn’t notice is what scares these people.
That they might be equal to us
Or
They might Surpass us …
But
When you look around at the current status of people's lives you already see replicants everywhere. Just at my school as I'm writing this I see a girl's brain turned off while mindlessly scrolling through her phone. I see a lot of myself in this random girl that I called out lol because I am just as mindless and emotionless most of the time (even writing this). I should be doing something greater than this but here I am sitting alongside Deckard in the same machine eating the same noodles waiting for something to change.
So when I first saw the tears in the rain it had a hard effect on my life. I saw my own life wasting away while a replicant who has more of a soul than I ever could live more than me. I felt something, it felt like I was given another chance to be something greater than what my life is at the cost of someone else's. It's sad that I never truly lived. I still had stuff to distract me from my goals.
That's why I find the ending so brilliant. It's Deckard and me staring at a paper Unicorn, a dream that might not even be real. A dream that might never happen yet he still takes what he has and closes the door on everything.
So while I'm closing this door another door opens, but your door is different from person to person. So I hope that you stop wasting your time reading this and go open your door to a dream whatever that might be and close the the door on the uselessness.
