House
I love it when you watch a movie that you love but haven’t seen in a while is not only as good but significantly better than the last time. What I love in this watch is how everything from the aunt is a way to cope with the atomic bombs and by doing that obsyashi creates such a vivid picture of the pure and incomprehensible chaos that is life and of the human condition and the human need for delusion as a way to cope with the horrors and confusion of life. Because if those aspects everything in this just feels so sad, it’s about a woman who can’t accept life and ultimately chooses a world where she continues to live past death. It’s such a terrifying portrayal of the inability to truly love, it’s a spirit world of pure hell and the saddest part is she chose it. And this isn’t even getting into the aspects of its subversion of pop culture, it’s own self awareness and its commentary on story telling itself, it’s depiction of a culture that clings to labels to hold on to a form of identity as a response to the chaos of life, and it’s unparalleled visuals as a representation of that chaos and horrifying nature of being unable to move on in life. Holy fucking shit what a great movie
