State of the Art
[...] was a blurring of fact and fiction but it was part of an even broader programme.
The President's advisers had given it a name -they called it "perception management" [...]
[...] And, in the process, reality becomes what?
Reality becomes simply something to play with to achieve that end.
Reality is not important in this context.
Reality is simply something that you handle.
Environmental factors, as shown in this documentary, are entirely independent of the individual. The inward turn, catalyzed by Bernays in the latter half of the 20th century, has led me to worry that this might be an ontological state.
Even when the environment is highly controlled, the tabula rasa theory—supported by ongoing experiments in social engineering—appears to be incorrect. A lack of agency might, then, be an inherent condition of existence. Simulated reality is not only what individuals see and perceive, but also what they are fed. People consume simulations of reality, becoming simplified and cartoonish versions of themselves. A downgraded, yet undistinguishable Ouroboros called reality.
When there is no agency over either internal or external factors, when hedonistic actions have been exhausted, when the body has reached its limit, when even reality cannot be uncovered or understood, when life becomes a burden to be spent merely financing itself, serving as palliative care—what, then, is the argument against giving up?
