Logan
Logan (2017) Review
HIS TIME HAS COME
I watched Logan for the first time tonight after hearing good things about it. From the opening scene, you know why this film wasn’t playing around. Some of the best action I’ve seen out of any film, let alone comic book movie.
A truly perfect send off for the character…
This movie defies the entire genre of comic book movies. It shows you how comic book movies can have heart and a deep core within it. It’s such a violent and gritty film, that is heavily grounded. Sometimes having that grounded feel, is better than some big CGI battles with no meaning. This film isn’t that big in scale, which goes to show….you don’t need a massive scale to make a good comic book movie. If you forget about all the X-Men related things in the film…. it’s mainly about an old guy who’s haunted by his past with regret. With Logan counting out his final days before it’s his time. The movie really gets heartbreaking and devastating in many scenes. As usual Hugh Jackman gives his performance of a life time. Not one scene he’s in is bad… every time he’s on screen… I just loved it.
The director does an awesome job at pushing this film the way it needs to go. The cinematography in this film is pretty remarkable… in a sense… the vibe of the movie is dull and full of action. Even in the simple shots like… Laura holding Logan’s hand. And don’t even get me started on the camera work in the final forest battle…. top 5 greatest comic book scene ever.
The movie just feels so real…. no space shit… or weird CGI battles. Just a heartfelt movie with brilliant action and acting from everyone. As I was saying earlier…. the themes of this movie really help it to shine. Showcasing the likes of… grief, regret & pain. To see Logan and Laura relationship grow from the start of the film to the end is perfect. To see them slowly grow closer together is great… packed with so much emotion. It’s no doubt… one of the best parts of the film.
This isn’t my favourite comic book movie out there. Because I simply enjoy others more… but I wouldn’t argue with anyone who said this is the best comic book movie of all time. I would argue if you compared it to a few I have in mind…..
Overall, “Logan” is a brilliant comic book movie. It has so much emotional layering to the film. With amazing acting performances, especially Hugh Jackman. The action is fantastic and the emotional parts hit you hard. On a technical standpoint… this movie is fabulous… with the vibe and the cinematography…. truly fantastic. I love it so …so much. I’m excited to see if my rating changes in the future… but I think my rating suits my first viewing of the film.
