Rewatched this with a friend who was watching it for the first time. I introduced the ideas of caste to him on the phone and we planned to watch the movie so he could get the full picture. Upon rewatch I was flooded yet again with the insight but more importantly the emotional frustration I had when first reading caste back in 2021. For me the book and as extension the movie helped capture and explain the obvious discrimination and differences I experienced as a black boy raised in a majority white area. For years I had little to no vernacular or tools of expression to explain what confused me or upset me because to my peers and teachers the caste system we were apart of was the norm. I’m extremely happy this movie and book exists to help educate and start the conversations on caste and the way we can start to dismantle its invisible systems.
