Sing Sing
This is IT!!!! This is why I love movies, love theater, love literature, love the performing and fine arts. If we let them, they help us recognize aspects of ourselves, empathize and connect with others, and sometimes just have fun. And to me, that’s what it means to be human. Yes, I’m a lifelong theater kid and cinephile, so this movie was made for me, but I think anyone with a heart will find something to love in it.
If it’s not obvious, Sing Sing blew me away. Definitely going to be one of my faves come list-making time in December.
Favorite Parts:
-How they presented the “cast list.” Not a mad rush to a posted list, just the roles coming to light through an exercise. Small but a smart choice. Really just loved any time they were preparing for the production or participating in improv/character-building exercises.
-Colman Domingo throughout the movie, but especially during the parole board hearing. If this doesn’t win him an Oscar…
-Clarence Maclin. The number of subtle choices he made…so many times I was welling up while he was on screen. Best Supporting Actor, come on!!!! (to steal a phrase from my other favorite movie of the year so far).
-The late night conversation with Mike Mike.
-The thunk of that heavy envelope and the reveal of the skinny one.
-The credits. 😭
